Kathryn Stafforrd
Born 1964, based in London.
Kathryn returned to painting in 2012, having spent the previous 10 years curating the CHASE Contemporary Art Exhibition at the Royal College of Art.
Her work is primarily focused on the landscape, both rural and urban.
Her depiction of the rural landscape has become increasingly abstract as she has sought to capture the atmosphere in paint. She cites, JMW Turner and Gerard Richter as key influences on the direction of this recent work. She has been repeatedly drawn to the Cornish coastline, seeking to understand and capture its unique luminosity and radiance in simple form.
Her work portraying the urban landscape is in direct contrast to the rural scenes. The influence of Michael Andrews can be seen in the use of stencilling, while the application of colour draws on the palette of Milton Avery.
In her continuing study at the Heatherley School of Art in London she hopes to develop and expand this work.
